Getting MDLs
There are two types of model formats that Warcraft 3 uses: MDX and MDL. MDX is the compressed version and is best to use in the actual game. MDLs are useful when you want to edit something because you can open them with any text editing program. All the programs available here use MDLs as both input and output.
1) Extracting MDXs
- Download and open Warcraft 3 Previewer, which provides a convenient way to extract MDXs from MPQ archives.
- Decide which MPQ archive you want to open. If the unit you want is from the original, then you need war3.mpq in your main Warcraft directory (by defualt C:\Program Files\Warcraft III\). If it's from the Frozen Throne, you'll want war3x.mpq.
- Go to File->Open MPQ and browse to select the MPQ.
- Now you need to locate the specific unit. Use search (View->Find in MPQ or CTRL-F) or browse manually.
- Extract the MDX to somewhere by going to Current File->Extract MDX.
2) Converting to MDL
- Download and open Yobguls' File Converter, which converts MDXs to MDLs and back among other things.
- Click "Load File" and choose the MDX you extracted.
- Click "Convert to MDL".
